You can’t just buy a goldfish!

What happened to the days when you walked into a pet shop, bought a tank and chose a couple of sweet little plump goldfish to inhabit it? Hell, didn’t they used to give them away as prizes at funfairs and circuses?!

Those days are over. You can’t just buy a goldfish anymore. You have to buy a tank and all the trimmings and have it in place and prepared for 3 days in advance of buying the fish! Something about the water needing to be treated for the fish otherwise they might die.

Well, as a parent, I am sure you can imagine how well it went down with my 3.5 yr old, when we happily strolled into the pet shop discussing what we were going to call his two little fish. The fish were to be a present for being so brave after his operation. Instead, I had to carry a rather upset and snotty toddler from Pets at Home whilst trying to think what would fill a large fish shaped hole in his heart…
