I need you to wipe away my tears

The toddler isn’t a bad sleeper. All in all he averages a good 11hrs a night. Whether those hours are 11hrs ‘straight’ is a different story. He goes through fazes of stupidly early wake ups to phases of waking up regularly throughout the night to the best phases, when he just sleeps through. That is such a wonderful phase.

I had a night recently that I felt was worthy of sharing with you. At 2.40am the toddler wakes and in far too spritely a manner for the time shouts, ‘Mumma, can you get into my bed’. Me: ‘No, it’s too small, go back to sleep Barney’.

The sobbing starts, followed by ‘Mumma, I need you to wipe away my tears‘.

How’s that for a line! And as if that wasn’t dramatic enough, he then followed up with ‘Mumma, PLEASE (said whist sobbing) wipe away my tears’

Wow, this kid knows how to pull at the old heart strings! Finally he drifted back off, after I had of course gone in and wiped away his tears (don’t judge me. It was harrowing!).

I too went back to sleep at 3.08am. Not thrilling when your alarm is set for 5am.

The next wake came at 4.02am with calls of ‘I’m cold. Mumma please can you pull my cover up’  What am I, some sort of slave. Me: ‘Pull it up yourself’  Toddler: ‘Mumma please, I’m freezing’, followed by…..wait for it……the noise of teeth chattering!

By this point I’m genuinely wondering if he been on some sort of course in the art of master manipulation. I stood firm this time, not budging on that one.

I mean seriously, I’ll be using myself as a human blanket soon if I’m not careful! After going back and forth, him asking, me saying no, he covered up and went back to sleep.

Hmmm, Wonderful.

Edging ever closer to the 5am alarm call. I lie wide awake wondering as I often do, how this little man arrived in my life, quickly followed by what colour I should paint the unit in the Dining Room to wishing I knew where that white knit jumper went from Winter 2014.

I wake to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young happily signing My House (my alarm song) and in the worst mood I have been in for some time stomp downstairs.

The stomping clearly backfired as 5 minutes later, at 5.10am, I hear ‘Mumma, is it morning’!

And so starts another day….at 5am!

Ah bless. I actually find it worse now they’re generally both sleeping through the night. For the 7 1/2 months that Lia was a terrible sleeper, I survived on four hours of broken sleep (three wake-ups in the four hours I was in bed and not either working or on child duty). It wasn’t easy, but I survived. And now, one wake up during my normal six hours sleep and wow, it’ the end of the world! I hope normal 11 hours of toddler sleep service resumes soon!xx
