The F Word

A peaceful Sunday morning. The smell of fresh coffee wafts through the house. Baby B is in the conservatory playing with his train track, I’m working on my laptop at the kitchen table and Daddy A is whipping up some scrambled eggs.

The peace is suddenly shattered as words come from Baby B’s mouth that I hoped I would never hear…….”Oh f**k it

Both Daddy A and I freeze, staring wide eyed at each other.

What’s up, Buddy?“Daddy asks,

“I’ve got a problem” B replies.“My train has fallen off the track”.

So, not only did he use the words, but he used them in context.

I thought long and hard about writing this post, mainly because of how it reflects on us, as parents.

I’m sure that most of us are guilty of letting our tongue slip occasionally in front of the children. Whether it be letting out an expletive when in the car or an inappropriate word if, for example, you drop something heavy on your toe!

Either way, I admit to occasionally swearing in the presence of Baby B, but it is rare. Apparently though, not rare enough, as it would appear that he has taken it on board to use himself.

This is awful and believe me when I say, I am mortified.

Whilst we were away last week, B was spending some quality time with his Nonna & Aunty. Mid afternoon I receive the following message from my sister,

“Your son just said f**k it off to a puzzle”

Great. Again, used in perfect context as he struggled to find the corner piece.

Time to take action. I briefed the family to explain to B that he must not use those words, the naughty step will come into play if he does, and to inform his nursery of his newly adopted vocab.

It’s not his fault, I know that, but it is a stark reminder that at two and a half, they listen to everything. They listen and repeat!

We take this very seriously, and so are therefore making a serious effort to watch our tongue now. I can’t be the mother of the sweary kid!

Thankfully, after the two incidences of note, he hasn’t used the words again.  Fingers crossed that is how it continues!
